This Video is Part 2 of the Beginners Guide to Creation of Bonsai Dead Wood and deals with a simple but effective technique of Jin, or Dead Branch Stubs. Jins add subtle ageing character to a Bonsai.

I'm going to talk to you about the creation of Jins
m
To start with, you create a sharp cut around the place where you'd want to cut the Jin to. You cut off the Jin to the length that you need it which is usually no more than an inch to inch and a half. So that’s about 2.5 centimetres to about four centimeters long.

Once you cut to the right size, you need to use a sharp knife to peel away the bark that is on this bit that we've cut away. Use the Jin pliers if you need to, if it’s a bit stubborn. It helps to twist the Jin pliers around so it removes the bark.

And once you've removed the bark, you use the Jin pliers to strip away strips of wood, that is the inner hardwood that is on the branch. We have to make sure that it is treated properly. I would wait a couple of days so that the wood dries just a bit.

That's really how to create a Jin on a bonsai.

Bonsai trees require careful and diligent maintenance to keep them healthy and beautiful. One of the essential tools for this maintenance is bonsai jin pliers. Jin pliers are specialized tools specifically designed to help bonsai enthusiasts shape and style their trees. In this blog post, we will discuss what bonsai jin pliers are, what they are used for, and how to choose the right pair for your needs.

What are Bonsai Jin Pliers?

Bonsai jin pliers are a bonsai tool used to remove dead wood from bonsai trees. Jin pliers are characterized by their long, sharp blades, which are ideal for cutting through tough wood. They are also designed with an ergonomic grip that makes them easy to use for extended periods of time, even for those with limited hand strength.

Why Use Bonsai Jin Pliers?

Bonsai jin pliers are an essential tool for bonsai enthusiasts because they allow you to remove dead wood from your trees, which can be a time-consuming and difficult task without the right tools. Dead wood can harm your trees and detract from their beauty, so it’s important to remove it regularly or treat it with Lime Sulfer or wood hardener if it is to remain on the tree. Bonsai jin pliers make this task much easier and more efficient.

In addition to removing dead wood, bonsai jin pliers can also be used to shape and style your trees. The sharp blades of the pliers make it easy to create precise cuts and clean lines, which can help you to achieve the desired shape and style for your bonsai tree.

How to Choose Bonsai Jin Pliers

When choosing bonsai jin pliers, it’s essential to consider several factors to ensure you select the right pair for your needs. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind:

Blade Quality: The quality of the blades on your bonsai jin pliers is of the utmost importance. Look for blades that are made from high-quality steel and are sharp and durable.

Ergonomic Grip: Choosing bonsai jin pliers with an ergonomic grip that is comfortable to use for extended periods of time is vital. This will help to prevent hand fatigue and strain, even for those with limited hand strength.

Size and Weight: Consider the size and weight of the pliers when choosing the right pair for your needs. You want to select a pair that is lightweight and easy to handle but also large enough to provide the necessary leverage for tough cuts.

Price: Bonsai jin pliers can range in price from affordable to quite expensive, so it’s essential to consider your budget when making your selection. Keep in mind that investing in a high-quality pair of jin pliers can pay off in the long run by making your bonsai maintenance tasks easier and more efficient.

Using Bonsai Jin Pliers

Once you have chosen the right pair of bonsai jin pliers for your needs, it’s important to use them correctly to ensure maximum benefits for your bonsai trees. Here are some tips for using your bonsai jin pliers:

Make Precise Cuts: Use your bonsai jin pliers to make precise cuts when removing dead wood or shaping and styling your trees. This will help prevent tree damage and ensure a clean, professional look.

Clean the Pliers Regularly: To keep your bonsai jin pliers in good condition, it’s important to clean them regularly after use. This will help prevent rust and other damage that could compromise their performance over time. Simply wiping the blades with a clean cloth after use should be sufficient.

Use Protection: When using bonsai jin pliers, wearing gloves and other forms of protection is vital to prevent injury. The sharp blades can cause severe cuts, so take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety.

Store Properly: When not in use, store your bonsai jin pliers in a dry place to prevent rust and other forms of damage. You may also consider oiling the blades periodically to help keep them in good condition.

Conclusion

Bonsai jin pliers are an essential tool for bonsai enthusiasts, allowing them to remove dead wood, shape and style their trees, and keep them healthy and beautiful. When choosing bonsai jin pliers, consider the quality of the blades, the ergonomic grip, the size and weight, and the price. And when using these pliers, make precise cuts, clean them regularly, wear protection, and store them properly. With proper care and use, bonsai jin pliers can be a valuable tool for maintaining your bonsai trees for years to come.
