Eric receives a lot of questions about bonsai tools, and while he generally recommends the tools he uses, he decided to run a test of two other types of bonsai toolsets that are commonly purchased. In this video, he compares his normal everyday bonsai toolset to a set off Amazon and to cheap tools he purchased from our local hardware store through three distinct bonsai operations - cutting wire, trimming and branch cutting, and stripping bark.

00:00:37 Eric describes each of his tools. Scissors are basic for trimming branches, leaves, and twigs. Wire cutters made in Japan. When needing to cut larger wires, he uses a small bolt cutter. Branch cutter. He uses his pliers almost as much as his scissors. Pair of bent nose tweezers.

00:01:59 Review of the toolset from Amazon. It includes lots of tools, but not a lot that can be used and they're low quality.

00:02:41 Sharp metal burr on the scissors = danger! They also stick.

00:03:27 Not just one, but two small scissors that Eric doesn't feel are useful.

00:04:03 Mini shovel and rake - what would you use these for?!?

00:05:27 Pair of plastic construction garden loppers - not typically used for bonsai and these will fall apart.

00:06:10 Eric discusses a third option: buy a few simple tools from your local hardware store - a slip joint plyer, electricians' scissors, and angled wire nip. We've included affiliate links below.

00:06:33 Comparing these three sets of tools and how they work in certain operations. First, a wire cutting test.

00:10:43 Second, stripping back from branches.

00:11:10 Third, testing trimming and branch cutting on a Ficus bonsai.

00:13:48 Watch Eric's final recommendations! We've included links below.

Bonsai Tool Set

Bonsai is an art form that involves cultivating miniature trees in pots to create beautiful, sculptural works of living art. To achieve this, it is vital to have the right tools to help care for and maintain your bonsai trees. This blog post will discuss the essential tools you need to start your bonsai journey and what to look for when buying a bonsai tool set.

Why Do You Need Bonsai Tools?

Bonsai tools are specifically designed for the unique needs of bonsai trees. They are used for various tasks, including pruning, trimming, wiring, and repotting. Having the right tools can make all the difference when it comes to successfully growing and maintaining your bonsai trees.

What to Look for When Buying a Bonsai Tool Set

When buying a bonsai tool set, there are a few things you should look for to ensure you get the best quality tools for your needs. Here are some key factors to consider:

Bonsai Tool Set

Material: Bonsai tools are typically made from high-quality steel, such as carbon or stainless steel. Steel is durable, rust-resistant, and long-lasting, making it an excellent choice for bonsai tools.

Quality: Make sure to buy bonsai tools from reputable brands that are known for producing high-quality tools. Cheap, low-quality tools may break or become damaged easily, which can be frustrating and damaging to your bonsai trees.

Size: Bonsai tools come in different sizes, so make sure to choose tools that are the right size for your needs. For example, if you have larger hands, you may need bigger tools to work comfortably.

Purpose: Bonsai tools are designed for specific tasks, such as pruning, trimming, or wiring. Make sure to choose a set of tools that includes the tools you will need to care for your bonsai trees.

Essential Bonsai Tools You Need

Here are the essential bonsai tools you need to start your bonsai journey:

Bonsai Shears: Bonsai shears are used for pruning and trimming bonsai trees. They have long, sharp blades and a comfortable grip, making them perfect for working on bonsai trees.

Bonsai Wire Cutters: Bonsai wire cutters are used for cutting bonsai wiring, which is used to shape the branches of bonsai trees. They have sharp, pointed blades that can easily cut through the wire without damaging the branches.

Bonsai Knob Cutters: Bonsai knob cutters are used to remove large knobs or stubs on bonsai trees. They have a sharp blade and a curved design, making them ideal for removing large knots without damaging the tree.

Bonsai Root Cutters: Bonsai root cutters are used to prune the roots of bonsai trees. They have sharp, curved blades that make it easy to remove any unwanted roots without damaging the tree.

Bonsai Repotting Tools: Bonsai repotting tools include trowels, chopsticks, and root cutters and are used for repotting bonsai trees. They are essential for removing the bonsai tree from its pot, pruning its roots, and repotting it into a new pot.

Final Thoughts

When choosing a bonsai tool set, it is crucial to consider the size and type of bonsai trees you are working with, as well as your own personal preferences and level of experience. A basic set of bonsai tools should be sufficient for most beginners. Still, as you become more experienced, you may want to consider purchasing additional tools or upgrading to higher-quality tools.

Taking care of your bonsai tools is also important to ensure they last for many years. After use, tools should be cleaned, stored in a dry place, and oiled periodically to prevent rust.

In conclusion, having the right bonsai tool set is essential for successful bonsai care. By investing in quality tools, you will be able to create beautiful bonsai trees with ease and enjoy the rewarding experience of growing and caring for your bonsai collection.
