Using a Bonsai work table makes handling much easier when working on a tree. Some turntables are intended for stand-alone use while other are designed for tabletop use. This video is dedicated to the latter and looks at the pros and cons of using the Ikea Snudda lazy susan as a tabletop Bonsai turntable.

While there are multiple dedicated Bonsai turn table products on the market, many beginner Bonsai enthusiasts look for low cost alternatives or even at DIY Bonsai turntables. When I first saw the Ikea Snudda I thought it could make a good alternative to the well known cheap plastic turntables while fitting in the same price range. The aspects I loked at were: build, size, waterproofing, adherence, maximum supported weight and cost.

Time will tell if this is indeed a good alternative to a Bonsai turntable and I may post a future update video on it.

If you know of other such alternatives for a dedicated bonsai turn table please let me know in the comment section.

Bonsai Turntable

Bonsai trees are beautiful, delicate creations that take time, patience, and skill to cultivate. One of the most important tools in shaping a bonsai tree is a bonsai turntable. In this blog post, we will explore a bonsai turntable, why it is crucial, and how to use it to achieve the perfect bonsai shape.

What is a Bonsai Turntable?

A bonsai turntable is a rotating platform used to turn a bonsai tree while it is being worked on. This allows the bonsai artist to easily access and shape all sides of the tree without having to move around it. Bonsai turntables come in different shapes and sizes. They can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood, plastic, or metal.

Why is a Turntable Important?

A turntable is a crucial tool for bonsai artists because it allows them to work on their trees from all angles without having to move around the tree. This is especially important when shaping the branches, as it is much easier to see and work on the branches when the tree is turned to the right angle. Additionally, a turntable makes it easier to see the tree’s overall shape, which is essential in maintaining balance and symmetry.

Another advantage of using a turntable is that it reduces the stress on the bonsai artist’s body. Shaping a bonsai tree can be a physically demanding task, especially when working on larger trees. By using a turntable, the artist can avoid repetitive motions that can lead to strain and fatigue.

How to Use a Turntable

Using a turntable is simple and straightforward. Once the tree is placed on the turntable, it can be easily rotated to any angle. This allows the bonsai artist to work on the tree from any perspective, ensuring that all branches are evenly shaped.

It is important to place the bonsai tree on the turntable so that it is level. This will ensure that the tree stays stable while being worked on. If the tree is not level, it may fall off the turntable or become damaged while being shaped.

When using a turntable, it is essential to work slowly and carefully. Bonsai trees are delicate and can be easily damaged if handled too roughly. Take your time to make precise cuts and shape the branches carefully.

It is also important to keep the turntable clean and free of debris. Dirt, sawdust, and other materials can accumulate on the turntable and make it difficult to turn. Regular cleaning will ensure that the turntable operates smoothly and that your bonsai tree is not damaged while being shaped.

Final Thoughts

A bonsai turntable is an essential tool for bonsai artists. It allows them to work on their trees from all angles, reduces stress on their bodies, and helps to achieve the perfect bonsai shape. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced bonsai artist, a turntable is an investment that will pay off in the long run.

In conclusion, if you are serious about bonsai tree cultivation, consider investing in a turntable. With its ease of use, versatility, and ability to make shaping your bonsai trees much easier, it is definitely worth the investment. Not only will it help you achieve better results, but it will also make the process of shaping your bonsai trees much more enjoyable.

Remember to always work slowly and carefully, and to keep your turntable clean. With the right tools and a little bit of patience, you’ll be able to cultivate beautiful, perfectly shaped bonsai trees in no time.

So go ahead and take the next step in your bonsai journey by investing in a turntable. Happy bonsai shaping!
